Meet Bob and Barbara Shepherd from Shepherd Farm. Since 1987 they have farmed on about 20 acres of land, all planted with orange trees. Located near the Santa Clara River in Fillmore, their operation has been organic for about 28 years, and they share their farm growing organic herbs as well. With their poultry and egg business, they are raising about 450 young chicks along with their laying hens to rotate a total about 1600 hens in production. All these hens are pastured and range free under the orange grove and are surrounded by special fencing to keep the coyotes or any other animals out. Bob started the Ventura Certified Farmers’ Markets about 12 years ago and he sells in 3-4 markets per week, selling about 100 dozen eggs per market. Bob loves what he does and enjoys spending time with his wife on the farm. Stop by all four VCCFM markets and pick up these delicious eggs.
